Ashley Remminga is a graduate researcher in Global Cultures and Languages at the University of Tasmania. My research explores queer and, in particular, transgender and gender-diverse participation and engagement within popular culture and fandom. My current research explores how gender-diverse individuals consume and form meanings through genderbending anime and manga.

Why This Website Style

Perhaps you may wonder why I chose this unconventional web style for my official academic profile.

As the internet and notably major social media platforms undergo enshitifaction and become part of the dead internet, there is a need for individuals to seek out new places where AI has not touched.

The struggle to find such platforms reminds me of the early 2000s when algorithms didn’t funnel everything into only a handful of locations. The early 2000s was also when I spent way too much time building websites on the defunct Piczo.com. If Piczo had taken off instead of YouTube and Facebook, I would be a millionaire by now.

Piczo shared many similarities with this web style, including sparkling GIF backgrounds, glitter fonts, and other aesthetically displeasing web designs. While it is disgusting, this nostalgic style also has some charm.

So why did I choose this style?
1. To pay homage to the web design of the early 2000s.
2. As my research is centred around popular culture, my website should also reflect some degree of popular culture.
3. To hopefully instil some trust that AI will not touch this platform, as even AI wouldn’t wish to design something this grotesque.

I hope that clears up some questions about this site.

Temp Design

Whilst I do love this style I also realised it may not be the most suitable for my official website.

Please wait just a little bit longer for the official design.

This will serve as a placeholder in the meantime.
